Pootjies is ‘n hondjie sonder ‘n huis van sy eie. Sy soeke na ‘n blyplek neem hom na die groot, besige straat. Hy is honger en eensaam, en word by eetplekke weggejaag, en terwyl hy vlug verloor hy sy enigste besitting – ‘n mooi, rooi serp. Moedeloos hardloop hy weg en krul homself op in ‘n balletjie. Maar dan kom vra ‘n vriendelike dogtertjie hom of hy dalk sy serp verloor het, en Pootjies kry uiteindelik ‘n huis.
